Greg ‘Stackhouse’ Prevost – Universal Vagrant

After four decades in the game, it was only a couple of years ago that Greg Prevost released his first solo record, the acclaimed Mississippi Murderer, where Delta blues and high-energy rock & roll met somewhere between the Rolling Stones, the Yardbirds and the New York Dolls, to name the most obvious influences.

Prevost strikes again with an exceptional new album. Universal Vagrant, his second solo outing, improves on its predecessor—as expected—and those who have already heard it claim it’s by far the best work of his career. It also confirms what many already knew: Prevost is a great songwriter who knows the roots of his music better than almost anyone, and he possesses one of the coolest voices in the whole rock & roll business.

On this record he continues to pay tribute to his heroes while revealing his most seminal influences—from the giants of original blues (“Moanin’ the Blues”, “Mean Red Spider”) to his personal idols, now part of his musical DNA: Keith Richards and Johnny Thunders (“Gin Soaked Time Warp”, “Shot of Rock and Roll”, and the spectacular gospel-tinged “Lord Shine a Light on Me”). And let’s not forget the darker, more dangerous side of psychedelic punk in the Stooges tradition (“Evil on My Mind” and the incredible version of “Codine”).

The album boasts simply perfect sound and production, overflowing with elegant arrangements, attitude and class of a kind that’s becoming increasingly rare.
