Keith\u2019s fifth solo album \u2013 and his first self-produced effort \u2013 \u2018The Rhythm of the City\u2019 finds him expanding his approach on a horn-heavy 10-song collection that\u2019s in thrall to the classic sounds of Bluff City soul and rock and roll. \u201cI was at my home in Memphis one evening and heard a car pass by blasting Al Green\u2019s \u2018Love and Happiness,\u2019 which was recorded just a couple miles away,\u201d says singer-songwriter John Paul Keith. \u201cI was struck by how Howard Grimes\u2019 drumming just seems to embody something about the feel and the pace of life for me here. I thought to myself, \u2018Howard Grimes is the rhythm of the city.\u2019 My next thought was, \u2018That sounds like a title track.\u2019\u201d Conjuring up his own unique musical m\u00e9lange \u2013a sweet spot where the sound of Sun blues, Stax soul, and Hi R&B all meet \u2013 it\u2019s a record steeped in the geography and culture of Memphis, which Keith has called home for the last 15 years. \u201cThe vibe came about organically from playing Beale Street and Graceland and working with horn sections more frequently the last few years,\u201d says Keith.
