The Outta Place - Prehistoric Recordings (Neon yellow coloured vinyl edition) - LP

The Outta Place - Prehistoric Recordings (Neon yellow coloured vinyl edition) LP
(Here's the recording of their 1983 demo tape, strictly mono, from which their first EP was drawn, released by Midnight in 1984. That was one of the very first Garage Punk records and in that record, you can hear the band's absolute devotion to the most wild, impetuous, uncontrolled rock'n'roll sound! The four live tracks from their 1984 show at The Dive stand as proof of their wildness and to enhance the whole thing you get the wonderful cover by Bastian Troger, Lenny Helsing's liner notes and a digital coupon attached!)
Area Pirata 15.00
Quant:

In New York at the beginning of the eighties, CBGB's times, to be clear, there were five boys, never satisfied, with a fuzz in place of the heart and so much Beat aptitude, Jordan (guitar), Andrea (drums), Chandler (voice), Shari (organ) and Orin (bass) : The Outta Place!
They became at once a big shot, along with the Fuzztones, in the arising garage revival scene. What you could hold in your hands is the recording of their 1983 demo tape, strictly mono, from which their first EP was drawn, released by Midnight in 1984. That was one of the very first Garage Punk records and in that record, you can hear the band's absolute devotion to the most wild, impetuous, uncontrolled rock'n'roll sound! Things Are Perfect Now: The Unlikely Resurgence of The Outta Place

When it comes to the things you never expected for 2021, getting a new record from NYC's Outta Place was certainly tops among the list. Even more so after the passing of venerable frontman Michael Chandler a few years back. The fact that there was even a Cavestomp reunion in 2007 was in itself a bit of a miracle.
Still, when Cheepskates member and unofficial Cryptkeeper of all things Dive, David John Herrera, mentioned he had received a copy of the Outta Place's new record in the mail on social media, it piqued my curiosity. I asked David if he would mind writing a few things about the release for our followers.
"Man it sounds so good. Totally primitive man! I have to get the record. I have all their other records. Tomorrow I can plug my phone into my car and blast it! Thank you for sending it." Ognir - 80s NYC garage/psych scenester

In referring to a Master he had studied, Pablo Picasso once stated, "It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child".
When the Outta Place began to take shape in 1982, their ages were 15, 16, 18, 19, and 20. And unlike most of the "Garage scene" groups of the time, the core of the band only knew of songs they spun on 60s compilation LPs titled "Boulders," "Nuggets," and "Pebbles" as well as other records by lesser-known bands of that era. They had no knowledge of 70s hard rock nor did they care to. Hence the music was being produced from the heart. They weren't trying to sound like the 60s, they were (musically) living it.In the early spring of 1983, they arrived at an NYC rehearsal studio I was working in. Though their sound was still rounding out, it was unmistakable that they were all on the same wavelength. The rhythm of the drums, bass, and organ was just throbbing, and the razor-like guitar was cutting through every lead. Vocally the singer approached every song with wild abandon, and it was very apparent that "these kids were onto something".

home, much younger friends of the band were everywhere. This new batch of recordings is a real treat. The first six tracks were selected from over 100 hours of reel-to-reel rehearsal tapes, and the second track "What ‘cha' talking" is the only original composition to which the entire band contributed. The remainder of the tracks were recorded "Live at The Dive." All are covers, but I always felt the song "Dirty Old Man" resonated because of their general age. "We're Outta' Place" is a rewrite of a song originally titled "We're Pretty Quick" and a "bonus track" is a rework of the "Batman Theme." For me, the song "Blonds" stands out because of its clean sound and late singer Michael Chandler's harmonica solo (uncredited), but generally the entire LP just rocks.

"Hey man just played the Outta' Place in my car. All I can say man is wow, it's still primitive after all them years! Love it. Brings back all them cool years at The Dive. Tell Orin thanks again. Just made my day".
You can pick up a limited-edition vinyl version of the new record at Italy's Area Pirata Bandcamp page. For more things Dive-related, please visit David's webpage filled with some neat photos and recollections from those days. If you're looking for more vinyl, you might also want to visit Orin Portnoy's Discogs page which features records from The Outta Place, The Bohemian Bedrocks, and The Lone Wolves.

Mike Fornatale - Shindig #113 03/2021

Another vitally important band you've never heard of, The Outta Place were right in the vanguard of the NYC garage/psych revival of the late '70s and early '80s. Fronted by the amazing Michael Chandler - later of The Raunch Hands - they were every bit as crucial as The Fuzztones, Vipers or Cheepskates, but never really got their due. Less "punk" than "garage" and more Standells and Chocolate Watchband than Ramones, with the requisite combo organ and fuzzbox guitar that all sounds so familiar now but was such a welcome punch in the face in 1982. This release consists of all the songs from their fi rst EP, with three others recorded at the same sessions and released as singles plus three live recordings and the most raw take on 'Who Do You Love' that you are ever likely to hear.

Andy / Fear & Loathing - January-June 2021

The Outta Place were a five-piece garage band from New York in the early Eighties. They released two albums on the legendary Midnight label during their brief career, before singer Mike Chandler went on to front the Raunch Hands. They earned a name for themselves by taking the garage revival sounds that were popular at the time but then subjecting them to a snarling makeover to create something new and nasty, albeit also rather catchy. This album releases the tracks from their first demo sessions, recorded back in 1983, along with a handful of live recordings taped at the wonderfully named Dive club in 1984. The demos (songs from which appeared on their first EP) are a little rough'n'ready soundwise, but this actually suits the material and gives it an appropriate authenticity. The live tracks are loud and raw, capturing the genuine excitement and energy of the band in their natural environment. If you like Garage music that really doesn't mess around and goes straight for your throat, this album is something you need to hear!

Bertrand Tappaz - Chronique 2021 - 12/03/2021 - VOIX DE GARAGE GRENOBLE

Donc : aux commencement étaient The OUTTA PLACE !
